Spicy Classic Chili Hot Dog Recipe

Steaming the hot dog in beer before grilling makes this hot so good. Topped with super easy slow cooker chili and onions make this the perfect classic chili dog. Add a little cheddar cheese or cheese sauce for a chili cheese dog.



  • 4 hot dogs
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 12 oz lager beer
  • 1 cup chili homemade or canned
  • 1 cup chopped onions
  • 2 T dijon mustard


  1. Preheat grill to 400° - 425°.

  2. Heat chili.

  3. In a pot large enough for the hot dogs to lay flat bring beer to a boil.

  4. Once the beer boils, turn off heat.

  5. Add the hot dogs and let sit for 3 -4 minutes.

  6. Grill hot dogs, turning frequently until nicely charred on all sides.

  7. When hot dogs are ready to come off, grill buns quickly.

  8. Top bun with chili.

  9. Top chili with hot dog and onions.

  10. Serve hot with dijon mustard.
