The History of the Daiquiri
The daiquiri is named after the mining town of Daiquiri on the southeastern tip of Cuba.
Apparently, around the time of the Spanish-American War, an American engineer, Jennings Cox, created the drink to protect his workers from yellow fever. It was thought that lime and alcohol would prevent deadly diseases.

To make the perfect Daiquiri you need a high-quality light rum, and equal parts freshly squeezed lime and simple syrup made with demerara sugar.
Once you have the basic recipe you can create any number of flavor variations.

How to Make the Perfect Classic Daiquiri
- 3/4 oz Fresh lime juice
- 3/4 oz Demerara sugar syrup
- 2 oz Light rum
- Lime twist
Chill your glass by filling it with ice while you make the daiquiri.
Add all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with crushed ice, and shake until extremely cold, with ice forming on the top.
Strain into a chilled glass - traditionally a cocktail or champagne coupe - a glass with a wide shallow bowl, but a martini glass will work.
Garnish with a lime twist.
