Grilled Farmer’s Market Hot Dog Recipe

Hot dogs may not be health food but adding some amazing fresh farmer’s market finds to your next hot dog roast will be a definite upgrade.

Locally grown greens, stone ground mustard, fresh herbs, and heirloom tomatoes top a healthier chicken hot dog.

Grilled Farmer's Market Hot Dog

Take a trip to the farmer's market and grab the freshest ingredients to make these yummy hot dogs. Buy artisan or local bakery rolls like a baguette.
Peppered bacon adds just the right salty, smokey flavor.

Ingredients

  • 4 100% all beef hot dogs - or use chicken or turkey hot dogs
  • 12 oz white wine - or water
  • 2 heirloom tomatoes - thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup red onion - finely diced
  • 4 farmer's market baguette
  • 4 oz creamy blue cheese
  • 1 T fresh basil - roughly chopped
  • 1 cup quick pickled cabbage
  • 1 green onion - chopped, including green tops
  • 1 T stone ground mustard
  • 4 slices peppered bacon - cooked, until crispy

Instructions

  • Pre-heat a grill to 400° to 435° F.
  • In a saucepan large enough to lay hot dogs flat, bring the wine or water to a gentle boil. Turn off heat. Once liquid has stopped boiling add the hot dogs and cover. Let sit simmering for 3-4 minutes.
  • Place hot dogs on the 400° - 425° grill. Grill, turning frequently for even cooking, until well charred on the outside.
  • When the hot dogs are just about done lower heat and quickly grill each bun and set aside.
  • Add tomato slices to one side of the baguette and add red onion to the other side.
  • Top with grilled hot dogs.
  • Top with blue cheese, pickled cabbage, green onion, and basil. Drizzle with stoneground mustard.

Peppered Bacon Recipe

 

To Make Quick Pickled Cabbage

 
Combine vinegar, water, sugar, mustard seeds, and salt in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Stirring until sugar dissolves, about 1 minute. Place cabbage in a bowl and pour in the vinegar mixture.  Cover and refrigerate for 10 - 15 minutes.  Drain and serve.
