Back in the day, I partnered with a friend from Shanghai to bring the flavors he remembered from childhood to the US Fancy Food Market. I learned so much about the marriage of flavors in all Asain cooking but specifically Shanghainese cuisine. We bottle sauces that used super premium ingredients sourced directly from families in China. The bottle version is no longer available so I have to make my own.
Simple Asain flavors come together in this easy chili sesame soy sauce recipe. I love the combination of sweet, salty and spicy, it is the perfect complement to all types of grilled meats and an awesome dipping sauce chicken wings, chicken finger and even potstickers.

Easy Chili Sesame Soy Sauce Recipe
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1 t minced garlic
- 1/2 1 rice vinegar
- 1/2 t sugar
- 1/2 t dark sesame* oil best quality
- 1/2 t minced red chili pepper or crushed red pepper to taste - such as Szechuan Whole Dried Chilies
Add all ingredients to a medium-sized bowl.
Gently stir until well-combined.
Let stand at room temperature for about an hour for flavors to blend.
* Dark Or Toasted Sesame Oil has a low smoke point and an assertive flavor profile. So don't sook this sauce before using. You'll want to brush it on your food several minutes before you are finished cooking. To use in a stir-fry, add halfway through cooking time.
