Beer Steamed Hot Dog with Gruyere and Beer Soaked Onions Recipe

The simple but unexpected flavors of the Beer Steamed Hot Dog with Gruyere and beer soaked onions topped with a honey dijon mustard.

Beer Steamed Hot Dog with Gruyere and Beer Soaked Onions Recipe

Beer Steamed Hot Dog Smothered in Gruyere cheese and fried onions

The slightly nutty flavor of the Gruyere pairs perfectly with the beer steamed hot dogs and onions. This is so tasty with just a little bit of Dijon mustard or go crazy and try a little honey Dijon mustard.

Ingredients

  • 4 100% all beef hot dogs - or use chicken or turkey hot dogs
  • 12 oz lager beer
  • 1 cup sweet Vidalia or Maui onion - thinly sliced
  • 4 hot dog bun
  • 4 oz Gruyere cheese - grated
  • 1 T Dijon mustard - or a honey Dijon

Instructions

  • Pre-heat a grill to 400° to 435° F.
  • In a saucepan large enough to lay hot dogs flat, sauté the onions in a drizzle of oil oil.
  • Add beer and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat and cook for about 10 minutes until onion s are soft, fragrant, and translucent.
  • Turn off heat. Once liquid has stopped boiling add the hot dogs and cover. Let sit simmering for 3-4 minutes.
  • Place hot dogs on the 400° - 425° grill. Grill, turning frequently for even cooking, until well charred on the outside.
  • When the hot dogs are just about done lower heat and quickly grill each bun and set aside.
  • Top with grilled hot dogs.
  • Top with cheese and beer steamed onions. Heat to melt cheese. Drizzle with Dijon mustard.
